2010 Season Preview
|
| The recent sights and smells of spring remind us that Rush Hour is indeed "around the corner."
Our
2010 season will hold 14 concerts, with a roster of over sixty artists
from around the country. The music spans seven centuries, from the
Spanish Renaissance to Kevin Puts' Quintet for Piano and Strings ("The Red Snapper") from
2006. Several of Rush Hour's favorites will be returning: Third Coast
Percussion, CSO cellists and friends with soprano Maire O'Brien, Fulcrum
Point New Music Project, organist Bruce Barber, Quintet Attacca, Fifth
House Ensemble, Rembrandt Chamber Players and the Chamber Singers of the
Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum, just to name a few!
Our 11th season opens on June 1 with the magnificent String Sextet No. 1 in B-Flat Major, Op. 18 by
Johannes Brahms, featuring artists from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Lovers of poetry and music will have a special treat as Children's Poet
Laureate Mary Ann Hoberman partners with pianist Kuang-Hao Huang in
Robert Schumann's "Scenes from Childhood," Op. 15 on July 13. And, the Euclid Quartet will make its Rush Hour debut in the season finale concert on August 31, performing Franz Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor ("Death and the Maiden").

June 1 will be here before we know it; but, in the meantime, there is plenty of wonderful music to experience:
Tonight, Wednesday, April 21, Baroque Band is
performing at St. James Cathedral as part of the Chicago Early Music
Fest. Hear this stellar period-instrument ensemble perform Vivaldi's
series of violin concertos, L'Estro Armonico. You can also find them in the orchestra pit of Chicago Opera Theater's performances of Giasoneon April 25.
Third Coast Percussion is playing tomorrow, Thursday, April 22 at the
Unity Temple in Oak Park in a program exploring the connections between
architecture and music. You can catch them again on Saturday, May 1 at the
International House at the University of Chicago. This program includes
ensemble member David Skidmore's Fanfare for a New Audience, written
for and premiered at Rush Hour last year.
The Chicago Chamber Musicians will perform an all-Mozart First Monday concert on Monday, May 3 at the Chicago Cultural Center. The program includes the Duo for Violin and Viola No. 2 in B-Flat Major, K. 424, and the String Quintet in C minor, K. 406. If you can't make it to Preston Bradley Hall, tune in to WFMT (98.7 FM) from 12:15 - 1 p.m. and listen in!
Finally, Rembrandt Chamber Players will present their Concert IV, "Winners and Miniatures," on Tuesday, May 11 at Merit School of Music in Chicago and on Sunday, May 16 at the Music Institute of Chicago in Evanston. This program will feature the World Premiere of composer Stacy Garrop's Miniatures for flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, bass, and piano.
